First of all, I am Ian Threlfall, a freelance sound engineer based in Manchester, UK. My work is primarily in and around the UK, however I do also get the fun of working internationally. My work is centred around providing and operating sound equipment for live events, whether that be “rock n’ roll gigs”, corporate events or theatre productions.
I studied at LIPA in Liverpool, During which I worked both on and off curriculum on a number of events during my time at LIPA including Liverpool Music Week, BBC Three’s ‘Liverpool Nativity’, ‘Breaking Out’ – UK Dance Tour and Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2007. In my final year I took on the role a sound production management role for the 3rd Degree festival, working with London based Capital Sound.
After graduating from LIPA in Summer 2008 with a First Class (Hons) I was fortunate to be able to move straight into the sound industry as a freelancer. Working straight away on the Stella McCartney Fashion Show, The Open Golf 2008 and once again the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. I now work for a number of hire companies and artists including: dBS Solutions, Stagetex, Theatre Productions and Capital Sound. I have been worked on a number of projects and artists including Jimmy Carr, CSE: Entertaining The Troops tours, Starsailor (FOH), ‘We Will Rock You’ musical tour, BAE Systems Conferences, BCM Reunion, Katie Melua, Paloma Faith, Warrington Music Festival, Mark Ronson, Al Murray, Bananarama and Armstrong and Miller.
In addition to my work in audio, I also co-own and run a web hosting company – magicgenie.co.uk (who, rather unsurprisingly host this site). magicgenie.co.uk has been operating for over five years now, and hosts quite a few entertainment related websites, from other engineers to recording studios. Prices start from £20 a year with a free domain!
Outside the world of work, I am paying for my sins by being an Everton Football Club supporter and I like to get to a game at Goodison when I can find the time. Also, like most people in my profession, I enjoy a good pint with good company! Good Times.
